BACKGROUND
Kampoeng Batja was founded in 2009 by Iman Suligi as a reflection of his deep passion for literacy, which began in the 1980s with his personal comic library called Taman Baca Tintin. After co-founding the Indonesia Membaca Foundation whose activities eventually paused Iman reignited his literacy mission upon retiring as an art teacher at a vocational school in Jember by establishing Kampoeng Batja on a 700-square-meter plot of land. Today, it has grown into an urban literacy destination featuring over 6,000 fiction and non-fiction books and various facilities such as free Wi-Fi, a treehouse, reading corners, an archery field, a book museum, and lodging. The name “Kampoeng Batja” was inspired by Iman’s desire to give his neighborhood a strong literacy identity during his time as a local RT (neighborhood unit) head, aiming to create a community where reading becomes a natural part of everyday life.

ACTIVITY AT KAMPENG BATJA
WISATA LITERASI
Internally, Kampoeng Batja offers a program called Literacy Tour, which is similar to an outbound activity for school students. During this program, students are invited to explore the various corners of Kampoeng Batja, engaging in storytelling, educational games, and drawing activities. This interactive experience aims to deepen their interest in reading and learning through fun and creative methods.
READING PARADE
Reading Parade is a literacy activity designed to foster a love of reading within the community through a fun, interactive, and festive approach. This event typically features various elements such as book parades, group storytelling sessions, art performances, book discussions, and literacy bazaars involving Community Reading Parks (TBMs), schools, communities, and other literacy activists. The main goal is to raise awareness about the importance of reading and to make literacy an enjoyable and inclusive part of everyday culture.
